{"id":4186,"date":"2016-08-15T02:33:47","date_gmt":"2016-08-15T02:33:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.niio.com\/wordpress\/?p=834"},"modified":"2022-05-15T10:45:28","modified_gmt":"2022-05-15T10:45:28","slug":"qa-with-kelani-nichole-of-brooklyns-transfer-gallery-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.niio.com\/blog\/qa-with-kelani-nichole-of-brooklyns-transfer-gallery-part-1\/","title":{"rendered":"A Conversation With Kelani Nichole of Brooklyn&#8217;s TRANSFER Gallery (Part 1)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kelani Nichole, Founder\/Director of Brooklyn based <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/transfergallery.com\">TRANSFER Gallery<\/a><\/strong>, started the exhibition space nearly four years ago in order to <strong>support and cultivate artists with<\/strong> <strong>computer-based practices<\/strong> through solo exhibitions, events and international art fairs.<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s\u00a0passionate about nurturing and growing\u00a0the digital art market via exposure and education and has taken the time to share some of her<strong> insights, challenges<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>hopes<\/strong> for this fascinating\u00a0medium. \u00a0<strong>Get to know Kelani.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_835\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-835\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-835 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/kelani-nichole-headshot-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Kelani Nichole\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-835\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kelani Nichole, Founder\/Curator, TRANSFER Gallery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em><b>What led to your interest in digital art, specifically computer-based work? <\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I studied Art History at university and i<\/span>n 2010 \u00a0joined a curatorial collective in Philadelphia. \u00a0As I planned my first exhibition it seemed natural to engage with\u00a0studios practicing online. \u00a0I gravitated toward the<strong> avant garde online movement loosely referred to as \u2018net art\u2019 <\/strong>and I was hooked.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, my curatorial specialty has developed along with these studios and I am happy to have a hand in evolving the means of support for artists working with distributed online art practices.<\/p>\n<p><em><b>What inspired you to open a physical gallery space dedicated exclusively to digital art?<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opening the gallery was an experiment \u2013 I wanted to continue working with the studios I supported in my early curatorial projects. \u00a0An article from<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/clairebishopresearch.blogspot.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Claire Bishop<\/a><\/strong> in Artforum late in 2012 titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/3052709\/Digital_Divide_Contemporary_Art_and_New_Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>\u2018The Digital Divide\u2019<\/strong> <\/a>was influential in my resolve to further develop these works through exhibition format in the gallery. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea was to focus on solo exhibitions featuring new, challenging work coming from the studio that didn\u2019t have another venue to be realized. The roster of artists was strong right out of the gate and the <strong>market came knocking on our door<\/strong>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><b>What do you believe are the biggest misconceptions about digital art and what would you like people to understand?<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The biggest misconception with \u2018digital art\u2019 is that it\u2019s any different than other means of contemporary artmaking. I\u2019m keen to<strong> stop using the word \u2018digital\u2019 <\/strong>to talk about these practices. \u00a0One of the biggest challenges to the appreciation of these emerging formats is our<strong> lack of vocabulary <\/strong>to discuss these practices and their implications on the institutions of the artworld. \u00a0The practices I support are contemporary art practices that have <strong>a fundamentally computer-based process<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0the works that come from the studios are an even split of <strong>moving images\/software pieces<\/strong> and <strong>physical objects.<\/strong> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The genres of practice are moving image, photography, sculpture, performance, time-based media, glitch, procedural animation, algorithmic art, installation with a heavy conceptual slant present in my program. I\u2019m specifically interested in<strong> Internet aesthetic, distributed art objects, the public space of the Internet, <\/strong>and<strong> emerging display technologies such as VR\/AR and high-definition 4K formats<\/strong>. \u00a0I am working to build a new market for animated GIF artworks, distributed public artworks and application based artworks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><b>How or where do you see the medium of digital art in 5 years? \u00a0Do you see a time when digital art is considered mainstream?<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes. I believe it is nearly there. \u00a0However, there is a grey area in the visual landscape we live in, a world flooded with creators and curators. I believe the art world is still struggling to address these practices and figure out meaningful ways to adapt and contextualize the explosion of creative authorship in our contemporary moment within the canon of art history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><b>What do you think about all the hype surrounding VR? \u00a0Do you think it\u2019s a tool that artists will widely embrace?<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes. Absolutely. \u00a0<strong>If you haven\u2019t used HTC Vive go do it immediately.<\/strong>\u00a0 Go, and you won\u2019t even ask that question anymore.
